I do'nt know much about flowers. I have a small yard. I would like to give it some life, it just look so bland. I live in chicago, that's why I would like the names of ones that grow back in the spring?
Can someone give me the names of flowers that are good in the shade, and that will return the next year?
go to home depot and check out their perennial selection theres lots of different varieties to chose from
Reply:Phlox is a great perennial that doesn't require any upkeep and very little sunlight. There are a lot of different varieties, so check with a nursery and find out which would be right for what you want. It's a ground creeper (typically), and has varying colours of blooms. We've got blue creeping phlox in our landscaping, and definitely adds a unique touch.
Reply:You can try hostas or astibles

Reply:Hellebores, Japanese painted fern, ajuga, lamiastrum (different than lamium) hardy cyclamen, liriope. Also for shrubs, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas.
Reply:Hostas are excellent for shade and they come in so many varieties that you're sure to find juat what you like. There are smaller types, larger types, plain light green, dark green, ones with white stripes down the middle of the leaves, those edged with white, lime green, etc. And the great thing is, since they MULTIPLY, you don't need to buy the larget pots available...they are pricy; you'll have more and more that you can easily divide in the coming years.

Reply:Toad Lilly is a great one not already mentioned.
Reply:Shade gardening is great! There are many plants available that thrive in the shade. I saw Hosta and Astilbe has been mentioned, and both of those are excellent plants. You also might want to consider Tiarella (Foamflower), Heuchera (Coral Bells), Athyrium (Fern), Dicentra (Bleeding Heart), Chelone (Turtlehead), Aquilegia (Columbine), and Lamium (Dead Nettle). I pasted a link in the sources area that has a fuller list of shade plants.
All of the plants listed above are perennials (they come back every year). You should be able to find them at any reputable garden center or nursery.
Good luck and happy gardening!
